About Kent

Introduction to Kent

Kent is a large county with a long coastline, serving a population of 1.4 million.  The county has a number of well known urban centres such as Canterbury, Ashford, and Tunbridge Wells as well as Whitstable, Dover, Folkestone and Margate. We are the largest local authority, with 600 schools, 700 providers of early years education and childcare and 1500 childminders. The quality of our education provision continues to improve, with 92% of schools and 97% of early years providers now rated good or outstanding. Pupils’ outcomes are above the national average in the Early Years Foundation Stage and all other Key Stages of learning.

The population is growing rapidly and we have a large programme focused on expanding our school provision, building new schools and growing more options for parents to increase their childcare. The County Council has a workforce in excess of 33,000 people, providing services from a large number of service establishments throughout Kent.  Our corporate office is based in the county town of Maidstone.

Our annual budget in 2016 -17 was £1.6 billion providing for a range of public facing services. This translates into a host of interesting roles and career paths awaiting those who want to work in a leading edge public sector organisation.
