Mark Walker, Director Special Educational Needs & Disabilities

Welcome

Dear candidate,

I am delighted that you are interested in these exciting roles within the Children, Young People and Education Directorate.

You will be joining the service at a time when as a system we are undertaking a transformational change for SEND families in Kent. The opportunity to make such a significant impact for families across the county is perhaps a once in a career occurrence. I know that as a service the SEN and Disabled Childrens teams are totally committed to making a difference and improving the experiences for our children in the county.  The appointments we make to these roles will be critical to the success of taking this transformation forward.

The last 12 months have really highlighted the dedication of those within the service with some truly inspirational stories of many individuals going that extra mile to help the most vulnerable families.  As a system we stepped up to the challenge and showed how effective we can be when it truly mattered.

The last year has seen us make significant progress across many areas to address the Written Statement of Action (WSoA) in the SEN service.  This is starting to feed through in the feedback that families are sharing and the reducing numbers of complaints that the service is dealing with. There are obviously still key areas that need significant work to address, but through discussions with schools, settings, parents/carers, young people and other key stakeholders, we have agreed the underpinning standards and expectations for Inclusive Education provision.  Now we have this in place we need the right people to drive this forward and bring it to life.

Our aspiration is to become an outstanding service that can be held up as an example nationally, that is what our children in Kent deserve and it should everyone’s aspiration within services. To help us achieve this, our priorities are: -

  • Ensure families have a smooth journey through the system
  • Improve the way we work with parents, carers, children and young people
  • Identify and assess needs earlier and in a timelier way
  • Create an effective EHC pathway
  • Ensure young people experience a well-planned and smooth transition to adulthood
  • Improve education, care and health outcomes for children and young people with SEND
  • Focus on workforce development

We are looking for individuals with proven track records in developing and delivering high quality services and improved outcomes for children and young people. If you have the energy, dynamism and expertise to embrace these challenges and help shape the future SEND services for children and young people in the County we would like to hear from you.
